Women and their music

by Josette

In an effort to keep the varied sounds of women's music alive, here is a list of new or recent recordings by women and includes informational bits about each release.

Women's Spirituality-New Age

Kay Gardner & Nurudafina Pili Abena, Onespirit, Ladyslipper Records. For years, Kay has been a pioneer in the women's music arena, with over a dozen recordings to her name. Known for her healing and meditative work, she has traveled the world creating such music. Qnespirit brings Kay and percussionist Nurudafina Pili Abena together for another fine piece of work.

Musica Femina, Heartstreams, Lilac Recordings. Kristan Aspen and Janna MacAuslan make up this flute guitar duo based out of Portland, Oregon.

Rock and Roll

Melissa Etheridge Yes I Am, Island Records. On this latest effort, Melissa passionately does what she has always done best: Rocks! I'll let you figure out the meaning behind the title...

Jazz

Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet, Saxhouse, Knitting Factory

Works.

Ella Fitzgerald and Her Famous Orchestra, The Early Years-Part 2, (19391941), MCA Records.

This double disk package is a reissue

Folk-Feminist

Margie Adam, Another Place, Pleiades Records. Known for her piano playing and beautiful vocals, Margie shares a mellow

mix of ballads on her latest release. Features accompanying musicians: Diane Lindsay, bass; Barbara Borden, drums; Adrienne Torf: synthesizers. Back up vocals by Susan Herrick, Libby McLaren and Sue Fink. Nanci Griffith, Other Voices, Other Rooms, Electra Records. Nanci grew up listening to the music of many folk artists. This release shares

the songs of some of those people who affected her. Janis Ian, Breaking Silence, Morgan Creek Records. Following a harrowing experience with her previous manager regarding personal taxes, Janis has

resurfaced on the music scene with Breaking Silence. I've always respected Janis for her genuine sensitivity and philosophy on life, and the message she weaves through her music. This recording is no exception.

Patty Larkin, Angels Running, Windham Hill Records. A few favorites of mine include "Might as Well Dance," "Helen," and "Pundits and Poets." This release features Mary-Chapin Carpenter and The Story on back up vocals.

Cris Williamson/Tret Fure, Postcards from Paradise, Olivia Records. A collaborative effort by Cris and Tret, two pioneering women who have so powerfully affected women's music for years. Their songs speak to all of us.

devoted to the earliest Decca recordings of Gospel

Ella. It is a fun one with over twenty tracks on each disc.

Blues

Etta James, How Strong Is A Woman, Island Records. This is a compilation of various works previously released on Etta's albums Seven Year Itch, and Stickin' to my Guns, with the exception of three new cuts.

Various artists, The Great Gospel Women, Shanachie Records. Thirty-one classic performances by the greatest gospel

women.
